How to Spend 6 Hours in Atlanta: High Museum and Puppetry Arts

Updated October 3, 2026

Six hours gives you Midtown's two most distinctive museums and a proper Southern meal. See Jim Henson's puppets at the puppetry center, explore the art in the High's white galleries, then eat she-crab soup in a Crescent Avenue bungalow.

Midtown is Atlanta's arts district, and the Arts Center MARTA station sits beside the Woodruff Arts Center, home of the High Museum. The High is the biggest stop of the day, so this plan gives it the longest slot. A short walk west, the Center for Puppetry Arts holds the Jim Henson Collection along with puppets from around the world. Both museums close on Mondays, so save this plan for another day of the week.

Stops and travel: 3 hr 42 min to 4 hr 32 min of 6 hours

  1. Stop #1: Center for Puppetry Arts

Founded in Atlanta in 1978, the center calls itself one of the world's leading homes for the art of puppetry. Jim Henson flew in for its opening that September. Its museum bills the Jim Henson Collection as the largest collection of Henson puppets anywhere, tracing his career from early television to the Muppets and beyond, while the Global Collection shows puppets from many cultures. The museum is closed on Mondays and opens later on weekends.

Tip: As of October 2026, museum admission is $18 for adults, and a ticket to a family show includes the museum, so check the day's performances before you buy.

  2. Stop #2: High Museum of Art

The museum got its first permanent home in 1926, when Hattie High donated her house on Peachtree Street. Today, it fills buildings designed by two Pritzker Prize winners, Richard Meier and Renzo Piano, and holds more than 20,000 works. The collection is strong in American art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, photography and folk and self-taught art. It opens Tuesday to Saturday and on Sunday afternoons, and it is closed on Mondays. Large backpacks must be checked at the free coat check in the Taylor Lobby.

Tip: As of October 2026, admission is $23.50 for visitors six and over, and on UPS Second Sunday, the second Sunday of each month, it is free for everyone.

Time to head out from High Museum of Art for South City Kitchen, Crescent Avenue. It's a 9 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  3. Stop #3: South City Kitchen, Crescent Avenue

Since 1993, this restaurant has served refined Southern cooking from a bungalow on Crescent Avenue, steps from the High, the Fox Theatre and Piedmont Park. Seasonal menus keep the house favorites, including fried green tomatoes, she-crab soup, shrimp and grits and fried chicken with collards. It serves brunch and dinner a short walk from Midtown station, and tables can be booked through its website.

    What to order

    • Fried green tomatoes
    • She-crab soup
    • Shrimp and grits
    • Fried chicken with collards

Tip: The restaurant pitches itself for a meal before a show at the Fox Theatre, so if you have tickets that night, book an early table and walk over afterward.
