How to Spend a 6 Hour Layover in Austin: AUS to Rainey Street and the Lake

Updated October 3, 2026

A 6 hour layover at AUS fits one compact corner of Austin, and Rainey Street is the closest. See free galleries by the lake, walk a block of old bungalows turned into bars and eat homemade sausage in a shady garden.

Rainey Street sits on the southeast edge of downtown, where Waller Creek runs into Lady Bird Lake. A century ago, it was a quiet lane of wooden cottages. After the city rezoned it for downtown use in the 2000s, owners turned the porches and yards into bars, and glass towers now rise around the survivors. The Texas Historical Commission notes that the block joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The river end belongs to a city cultural center devoted to Mexican American and Latino art. Because AUS lies along the same river to the southeast, this is the quickest town outing from the terminal. The cultural center opens Monday to Saturday, and on Sundays only for scheduled programs, so check its calendar before a Sunday visit.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Only when your inbound flight is on time and you carry nothing bigger than a backpack. Six hours is the shortest connection we would leave AUS for, and this is our nearest plan. If a delay eats into the day, the terminal's own live music stages and local food counters are the better choice. AUS asks you to be back 2.5 hours before a domestic flight and 3 before an international one, so leave Rainey Street with that in mind.

Getting from AUS into the city

From baggage claim, walk to the first floor of the Red Garage and take the tram to the rideshare and taxi zone under the rental car center. Ask for the Mexican American Cultural Center on River Street. A slower option is CapMetro Route 20 from the neon guitar stop to City Hall, then a walk east along Cesar Chavez Street.

Plan on about 1 hr 51 min for the round trip between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the first and last stops.

This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.

Visa and entry

Passengers who entered the United States on this trip have already cleared immigration and customs, either here or at their first US airport, so you are free to walk out. Travelers flying within the country need nothing beyond the ID they boarded with. Plan to go through TSA again on return. If your next flight leaves the country, head back earlier than this plan shows, because international check-in closes sooner.

What to do with your bags

AUS does not offer lockers or a left luggage desk, so whatever you carry off the plane stays with you all afternoon. The Rainey Street bars are crowded and full of steps. As of October 2026, Bounce lists Austin drop-off shops from $2.25 a day, a cheap way to free your hands.

Time to head out from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. It's a 1 hr transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  1. Stop #1: Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center

A wide pale building with a ribbed facade and a tall round tower over a glass entrance, behind an open paved plaza under a blue sky

This city-run center is devoted to the arts of Mexican American and Latino communities. Its galleries are free whenever the building is open, Monday through Saturday, and on Sundays only when a program is scheduled. The plaza faces Lady Bird Lake, and the hike and bike trail passes along the shore below. Exhibitions change through the year, so expect anything from painting and photography to installations and community altars.

Tip: Autumn is its busiest season, with Day of the Dead programs on the calendar, so check the center's events page before you fly in case a workshop or altar exhibit lines up with your visit.

Time to head out from Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center for Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden, Rainey Street. It's a 3 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden, Rainey Street

Banger's sits among the old bungalows of the Rainey Street Historic District, so the walk up the street is part of the visit. It makes its own sausages and pours craft beer in a big garden of picnic tables, and its own site also lists pig roasts, beef jerky and pickled vegetables. Sunday brunch comes with live music. The kitchen opens daily from late morning, and earlier on Sundays for brunch. Expect a lively crowd that grows as the afternoon goes on.

Tip: Reservations are taken through the website, and they are worth making for a Friday or Saturday, when groups claim the long garden tables early.
