How to Spend a 10 Hour Layover in Denver: DEN to Dinosaurs and City Park

Updated October 9, 2026

A 10 hour layover in Denver from DEN is enough to reach City Park by train and bus. Spend a long visit at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, then walk to Ferril Lake for the view of downtown with the mountains behind it.

Plan lengths

  • 8 hours

City Park is a big stretch of lawns, lakes and old trees east of downtown, and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science stands on its eastern edge. The museum covers dinosaurs, space, gems and minerals, and the wildlife of several continents in detailed dioramas. Its terraces face west across the park, toward a view of the downtown towers with the Front Range behind them. You don't need to go downtown at all for this one. The A Line stops at 40th & Colorado on the way in, and a city bus runs down Colorado Boulevard to the museum. The museum is open every day, so this plan works any day.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Yes. The museum alone can fill most of a day, and the trip each way takes a little over an hour with the bus. The plan brings you back to DEN two hours before your flight, as the airport recommends, even with the longest visits.

Getting from DEN into the city

Ride the underground train to the Jeppesen Terminal and walk to the Transit Center at the south end. Take the A Line toward Union Station and get off at 40th & Colorado. From there, RTD Route 40 runs south on Colorado Boulevard to the stop at Montview Boulevard, next to the museum. For the return, take Route 40 north from the same corner back to 40th & Colorado Station and the A Line. As of October 2026, an RTD Airport Day Pass is $10 and covers the bus and both trains.

Plan on about 1 hr 51 min for the round trip between Denver International Airport and the first and last stops.

This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.

Visa and entry

Travelers who started abroad clear immigration and customs at DEN or at their first US airport before they can exit. Domestic travelers just need the ID they flew with. You will go through TSA screening again when you return. Leave yourself extra time if your next flight is international, because check-in closes earlier.

What to do with your bags

DEN has no lockers, so carry what you need and keep it small. Museums tend to limit large bags. As of October 2026, Bounce lists Denver drop-off shops from $3.95 a day, though the shops cluster downtown rather than near City Park, so a drop only makes sense if you pass through Union Station.

  1. Stop #1: Denver Museum of Nature & Science

This big natural history museum has been in City Park since 1908. Highlights include the Prehistoric Journey dinosaur halls, a space gallery and a hall of gems and minerals that shows off Colorado gold. The wildlife dioramas run floor after floor, with painted backgrounds of real places. The building's west side looks across City Park to downtown and the mountains. As of October 2026, general admission is $27.95 for adults, and the museum is open daily.

Tip: Head straight for the dinosaur halls if you arrive at a busy time, then work your way to the gems and minerals. Before you leave, step out to the west side of the building for the skyline and mountain view.

  2. Stop #2: City Park

City Park dates from 1882 and covers nearly 320 acres east of downtown. It holds the museum, the Denver Zoo, a golf course and two lakes. Ferril Lake, the bigger one, sits just west of the museum, with a pavilion on its shore and paths around the water. From its east side, the downtown skyline lines up over the lake with the mountains behind on a clear day.

Tip: Start on the east shore, near the museum, and look west across the water, where the pavilion sits in front of the downtown towers, with the mountains behind on a clear day. Then walk the north side of the lake to the pavilion. The late afternoon light on the lake is worth staying for, as long as the bus timetable lets you.
