How to Spend a 6 Hour Layover in New York: LaGuardia to Astoria
Updated October 3, 2026
A 6 hour layover in NYC from LaGuardia fits a Greek Astoria outing one bus ride away: Astoria Park's river views, a long meze lunch at Agnanti and a pastry box from Artion Bakery.
LaGuardia's next-door neighbor is Astoria, and it's worth leaving the terminal for. One bus ride drops you in the Queens district that has anchored Greek New York for generations, where tavernas, bakeries and café terraces line the avenues under the elevated train. This short plan keeps to the northern edge of the neighborhood by the East River. It takes in a waterfront park framed by two big bridges, a meze house across from its lawns and a bakery a short walk inland for something sweet to carry onto the plane.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Yes, as long as your flight is on time and you aren't waiting at a carousel. Astoria borders the airport, so this is one of the shortest rides out of any New York airport. Every stop takes walk-ins; if you land late, skip the park, eat, grab pastries and head back. If traffic on the highway looks heavy, stay at the airport.
Getting from LGA into the city
Board the M60 Select Bus Service at the curb outside Terminal B or C and tap a contactless card, phone or OMNY card on the reader before you step aboard. Ride west to Astoria Boulevard, where the bus meets the elevated N and W trains, then ride one stop north to Ditmars Boulevard and walk toward the river.
Plan on about 41 min for the round trip between LaGuardia Airport and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
Most LaGuardia flights are domestic. Travelers from Canada have usually done US immigration at a preclearance desk before boarding, so lunch in Queens needs no extra paperwork. Keep your ID handy for the security line on the way back.
What to do with your bags
Reserve a Bounce partner shop near the Astoria Boulevard or Ditmars Boulevard stations while you wait for the bus, then drop your bag before lunch. As of October 2026, Astoria shops start from $2.90 a day. A big suitcase is awkward on a crowded M60, and the taverna's tables sit close together, so travel light if you can.

About 3 hr 4 min in the city
Time to head out from LaGuardia Airport for Astoria Park. It's a 23 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
The city bought this stretch of East River shore in 1913, and the park now sits between two engineering giants. One is the steel arch of the Hell Gate Bridge, which carries trains toward New England and is said to have inspired the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The other is the long span of the RFK Bridge. In 1936 the Works Progress Administration added a huge pool, which NYC Parks calls the city's oldest and largest. It hosted the US Olympic swimming and diving trials that year and again in 1964. Benches along the waterfront path look across the churning channel of Hell Gate toward Randalls Island and the Manhattan skyline. In 1904 the steamer General Slocum caught fire in these waters, the city's deadliest disaster before 9/11.
Tip: Walk the riverside path north toward the Hell Gate arch for the best photo of both bridges stacked against the skyline.

NaviTime to head out from Astoria Park for Agnanti. It's a 1 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
Facing the park across Ditmars Boulevard, this family-style Greek taverna builds its menu around meze plates meant for passing around the table. Expect warm bread with olive oil and herbs, baked saganaki, hand-rolled grape leaves, grilled octopus, whole fish and lemony roast potatoes. Open since the early 2000s, it takes its name from the Greek for gazing from afar, a good fit for a dining room that looks out over Astoria Park.
Tip: Order three or four meze for the table instead of a main each; small plates come out faster, which helps when you're watching the clock.

NaviTime to head out from Agnanti for Artion Bakery. It's an 18 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
Long known to the neighborhood as Artopolis, this Greek bakery sits on a pedestrian plaza a short walk from the elevated train. Its glass cases fill with spiral cheese pies, spinach pies, sesame koulouri rings from Thessaloniki, honey-soaked baklava and ekmek, a custard and cream dessert layered over shredded pastry. There's a coffee bar and a few tables if you want to sit with a frappe, but most people leave with a white box tied in string.
Tip: Buy the koulouri last; the sesame rings are best the day they're baked and make an easy snack at the gate.
