How to Spend 4 Hours in Philadelphia: Fishtown Coffee and a NoLibs Cheesesteak

Updated October 3, 2026

Four hours in Philadelphia is enough to ride the El north to Fishtown for coffee at La Colombe's flagship. Stroll into Northern Liberties past a park its neighbors built, eat a Del Rossi's cheesesteak and finish with a local ale at Yards.

Plan lengths
  • 4 hours
  • 8 hours

A generation ago the river wards north of Old City were factories and empty lots. Today Fishtown and Northern Liberties are where Philadelphians go for coffee roasters, breweries and restaurants run by young chefs. This plan is an easy, flat walk southwest from the Girard stop on the Market Frankford Line. It runs through rowhouse blocks and murals, with a community park as a breather and two of the best casual meals in the area. It works any day of the week and needs no tickets.

The 4 hour plan, stop by stop

Stops and travel: 2 hr 18 min to 3 hr 18 min of 4 hours

  1. Stop #1: La Colombe Fishtown

La Colombe started in Philadelphia in 1994 and became one of the country's best known coffee roasters. Its Fishtown flagship fills a soaring former warehouse on Frankford Avenue with long communal tables, a bakery counter and the roasting operation in view. Order at the bar, then take your cup outside to explore the avenue's vintage shops, record stores and murals. It opens early every day.

    What to order

    • Draft latte
    • Cortado
    • Seasonal pastry
    • Cold brew

Tip: Try the draft latte from the tap, a cold, creamy latte that La Colombe first poured here in 2015 before putting it in cans.

Time to head out from La Colombe Fishtown for Liberty Lands Park. It's a 19 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Liberty Lands Park

Neighbors turned a vacant industrial lot into this two acre green in the 1990s, and they still own and run it themselves, which makes it a rare community built park in a big city. Paths circle a lawn, a playground, a community garden and wildflower beds, with benches under young shade trees and murals on the surrounding walls. Volunteers keep it tidy, and the park asks visitors to keep dogs leashed and leave the flowers alone. It is free to visit from dawn to dusk.

Tip: Sit near the garden beds for a quiet break; the far corner is the calmest spot.

Time to head out from Liberty Lands Park for Del Rossi's Cheesesteak & Pizza Co.. It's a 10 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  3. Stop #3: Del Rossi's Cheesesteak & Pizza Co.

Some of the city's best cheesesteaks are made far from the tourist corners, and Del Rossi's in Northern Liberties is a strong example. The kitchen slices ribeye by hand, cooks it with fried onions and melts Cooper Sharp American over the top, all in a seeded roll baked for the shop. The Michelin Guide now lists it among the city's recommended restaurants. Pizza by the pie rounds out the menu. It opens daily and stays open late on weekends.

    What to order

    • Ribeye cheesesteak with Cooper Sharp
    • Cheesesteak with fried onions
    • Plain pizza

Tip: Eat it at the counter right away, while the Cooper Sharp is still molten and the roll is crisp.

Time to head out from Del Rossi's Cheesesteak & Pizza Co. for Yards Brewing Company. It's a 4 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  4. Stop #4: Yards Brewing Company

Yards has brewed in Philadelphia since 1994, moving through Manayunk, Roxborough and Kensington before landing in a big brewhouse and taproom on Spring Garden Street at the edge of Northern Liberties. The house Philadelphia Pale Ale is on taps all over the city, and the brewery runs tours that mix brewing basics with plenty of comedy. The kitchen serves smash burgers, wings and house-made pretzels all day, and walk-ins are welcome.

    What to order

    • Philadelphia Pale Ale
    • Seasonal draft
    • Super smash burger
    • IPA pretzel

Tip: Come during the weekday afternoon happy hour, when select pints and snacks like the IPA pretzel are discounted.
