San Francisco Panhandle Run to Blue Heron Lake and a Fitness SF Day Pass
Updated October 3, 2026
Eleven kilometers of trees, lawns and city blocks: past the Painted Ladies, west along the Panhandle and the car-free JFK Promenade to Blue Heron Lake, and back to a swimming pool.
Golden Gate Park is where locals head for long green mileage, and the Panhandle, a skinny strip of eucalyptus and lawn, feeds straight into it. Your route passes the pastel Victorians facing Alamo Square, then runs most of the way to Blue Heron Lake on JFK Promenade, car-free around the clock since 2020 and for good since 2022. Expect gentle climbs, including Steiner Street up to Alamo Square and the stretch past the University of San Francisco on the return. Fillmore's club gives day visitors a free locker for their bag. Before you head out, ask staff whether your pass covers a second visit, since some gyms only let you in once. Travelers hauling more can reserve Bounce nearby. As of October 2026, it lists San Francisco storage from $2.25 a day.

The run: Panhandle and Blue Heron Lake loop

Most of the distance is on car-free paths through the Panhandle and the park, with the lakeshore at halfway and only gentle grades.
- Distance
- 11 km (6.8 mi)
- Start
- Fitness SF Fillmore
Cut west through the Fillmore Center plaza to Steiner at Ellis and run south along Alamo Square, passing the Painted Ladies just before Hayes. Go west on Hayes to Masonic, jog over on Grove and Ashbury, and join the car-free Panhandle path to Stanyan. Turn down Stanyan, enter Golden Gate Park at Page and follow JFK Promenade west past the Conservatory of Flowers. Then take the path beside Blue Heron Lake Drive to the lake's north tip, still labeled Stow Lake on many maps. Keep to the footpath along the water on the lake's northeast side rather than the road beside it, then come back by the Music Concourse, Conservatory Drive and the Phil Arnold Trail. Leave the park at Fulton and Stanyan and follow Fulton east for two blocks, just past Parker. Cut north across the University of San Francisco campus to Golden Gate Avenue, then finish on Broderick, Turk, Pierce and Ellis and return through the plaza.
