How to Spend 8 Hours in San Francisco: Alcatraz and the Exploratorium

Updated October 3, 2026

8 hours in San Francisco is enough for Alcatraz and its cellhouse audio tour. Spend the afternoon on hands-on science at the Exploratorium, then end with crab cioppino in North Beach.

Plan lengths
  • 3 hours
  • 4 hours
  • 6 hours
  • 8 hours

Book the Alcatraz ferry before anything else, since sailings sell out, often weeks in advance. Reserve a morning sailing from Pier 33 and you can spend the afternoon a short walk south at the Exploratorium, a science museum on the piers where nearly everything is meant to be touched. For dinner, climb into North Beach for the tomato and seafood stew that Italian fishermen created in this city. Avoid Mondays, when the museum is closed.

The 8 hour plan, stop by stop

Stops and travel: 5 hr 30 min to 8 hr of 8 hours

  1. Stop #1: Alcatraz Island

From 1934 to 1963 this rock in the bay held the federal prison system's most troublesome inmates, Al Capone among them, and the cold currents made escape close to impossible. The included audio tour, narrated partly by former guards and prisoners, leads you through the cellhouse, down the corridor nicknamed Broadway and into solitary. Native American activists occupied the island from 1969 to 1971, and their messages still mark the water tower. As of October 2026, the day tour costs $47.95 per adult, ferry included.

Tip: Be at Pier 33 early, because boarding lines form well before each sailing.

Time to head out from Alcatraz Island for Exploratorium. It's an 11 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Exploratorium

Physicist Frank Oppenheimer founded the Exploratorium in 1969 as a hands-on museum of science, art and human perception, and it moved to Pier 15 on the waterfront in 2013. Hundreds of exhibits invite tinkering: bend light, build circuits or walk through Fujiko Nakaya's fog bridge outside. The pitch black Tactile Dome needs its own ticket. As of October 2026, adult admission is $39.95, and the museum is closed on Mondays and opens later on Sundays.

Tip: Head to the glass walled Bay Observatory at the far end for views across the water.

Time to head out from Exploratorium for Sotto Mare. It's a 19 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  3. Stop #3: Sotto Mare

This crowded, nautical North Beach dining room is known for what it calls the Best Damn Crab Cioppino, a tomato broth loaded with Dungeness crab and other shellfish. Rich Azzolino, a longtime San Francisco restaurateur, bought it with his family in 2014. The room is small and busy, so expect a wait at peak times, then plan a slow meal, since cracking the crab takes work.

    What to order

    • Best Damn Crab Cioppino

Tip: Order extra sourdough for mopping up the last of the broth.
