How to Spend a 6 Hour Layover in Atlanta: ATL to The Varsity and Mitchell House
Updated October 3, 2026
A 6 hour layover at ATL leaves room for one short MARTA ride into Midtown. Eat a chili dog at a drive-in that has fed the city since 1928, then see the small apartment where Margaret Mitchell wrote her famous novel.
Six hours is tight at an airport as big and busy as ATL, so this plan keeps the train ride short and both stops close to stations. North Avenue station lets you out a block from The Varsity, the sprawling red and white hot dog stand next to Georgia Tech. One stop farther, at Midtown station, a house on Crescent Avenue holds the cramped apartment where Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the Wind. Both are quick to see, and together they make a very Atlanta afternoon.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Only if your flight lands on time and you travel light. The train leaves from inside the Domestic Terminal, and both stops sit near stations, but the ride back and ATL's security line take a big share of six hours. Flying in from abroad adds immigration and the shuttle from the International Terminal, so stay at the airport unless you clear quickly. The Margaret Mitchell House closes at four in the afternoon and all day Monday, so land by early afternoon or make it a Varsity-only trip.
Getting from ATL into the city
Follow the MARTA signs to the station at the west end of the Domestic Terminal, between North and South baggage claim. Pay at the faregate with a bank card or phone, and use the same one when you exit. Any northbound Red or Gold train reaches North Avenue, where The Varsity is a block away.
Plan on about 54 min for the round trip between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
International arrivals clear US immigration and customs at ATL itself, so once you exit you are legally in the country and free to ride into town. Coming back, everyone goes through TSA screening again, and those connecting to a flight abroad should allow for longer document checks at the gate.
What to do with your bags
ATL has no lockers or left luggage counter, so plan where your bag will spend the afternoon. Bounce lists partner shops around downtown and Midtown. As of October 2026, its Atlanta storage is listed from $4.95 a day, and each shop sets its own price.

About 2 hr 51 min in the city
Time to head out from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for The Varsity, North Avenue. It's a 26 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
Frank Gordy opened The Varsity in 1928, and its own history says it soon earned a reputation as the world's largest drive-in. The restaurant still covers two city blocks beside the Downtown Connector and seats about 800 people. Order at the long counter, where the menu runs to chili dogs, onion rings and the Frosted Orange, a thick citrus shake. The dining rooms open every day.
Tip: Georgia Tech's football stadium is a short walk away, so on autumn home game Saturdays the counters fill with fans; come before the crowds or pick a weekday.

Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the Wind in a tiny apartment in this Midtown house, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Atlanta History Center runs it as a museum. Its self-guided exhibition, Telling Stories: Gone With the Wind and American Memory, looks at how the novel was made and how it shaped ideas about the South. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from nine in the morning to four in the afternoon and is closed on Mondays.
Tip: The house offers an audio tour that plays on your own phone, so bring earbuds and listen as you move from room to room through the exhibition.
