How to Spend 8 Hours in Denver: History Colorado, Wash Park and South Pearl
Updated October 9, 2026
Eight hours in Denver is enough for a museum morning and a long walk around the lakes of Washington Park. Start at the History Colorado Center, take an Uber to Washington Park, then walk to Sushi Den on Old South Pearl Street for dinner.
This plan starts downtown and finishes in the neighborhoods south of it. The History Colorado Center tells the state's story, from mining towns and ski resorts to the people who were here long before the gold rush. From there, Washington Park is a short Uber ride south, with two lakes, a historic boathouse and gardens along a loop path where locals run and walk dogs. From the park's southwest corner, a short walk west along Louisiana Avenue leads to Old South Pearl Street, a few blocks of restaurants and shops where Sushi Den has served dinner since 1984, with a light rail station nearby. That station has trains straight back downtown. Denver sits about a mile above sea level, so pace yourself on the park loop and keep a water bottle handy.

The 8 hour plan, stop by stop
Stops and travel: 5 hr 9 min to 6 hr 34 min of 8 hours
The state history museum opened in this building on Broadway in 2012. Its exhibits cover mining camps, ranching, ski towns and the Indigenous peoples of Colorado, with hands on displays and recreated scenes. Galleries change often, and some cover Denver's own neighborhoods and their stories. It sits a block south of Civic Center Park. As of October 2026, adult admission is $20, and the museum is open daily.
Tip: Ask at the front desk which galleries are new, and start there. Then pick one long-running exhibit rather than trying to see every floor.

NaviTime to head out from History Colorado Center, Broadway for Washington Park. It's a 38 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
Wash Park, as locals call it, has Smith Lake at its north end and Grasmere Lake at its south. The boathouse on Smith Lake was designed by J.J.B. Benedict and finished in 1913. On the east side near Grasmere Lake, the Mount Vernon Garden, laid out in 1926, copies the garden at George Washington's Virginia home. Path work sometimes fences off parts of the park, so follow the posted detour signs. There is no practical direct transit from the museum, so take an Uber.
Tip: Ask the driver to drop you near the boathouse on Smith Lake. Walk south along the east side to the Mount Vernon Garden and Grasmere Lake, then leave from the southwest corner at Louisiana Avenue and Downing Street and walk west to Pearl.

Sushi Den opened on Christmas Eve 1984 on the corner of South Pearl and Florida Avenue, when sushi was still a rarity in landlocked Denver, and it has grown into one of the city's best known Japanese restaurants. Much of the fish is flown in from a market in southern Japan, close to the founding Kizaki family's hometown. Its sister restaurants Izakaya Den and OTOTO share the same corner, and the low brick storefronts of Old South Pearl stretch out on both sides. Dinner is served every night of the week.
Tip: Walk-ins are always welcome, but a table reservation helps on weekends. Afterward, the Louisiana & Pearl light rail station is a short walk north for the ride back downtown.
