How to Spend a 12 Hour Layover in New York: JFK to Harlem and Uptown
Updated October 3, 2026
Twelve hours at JFK covers Harlem and the Upper West Side: soul food at Sylvia's, the Studio Museum, the giant Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Natural History Museum.
Uptown Manhattan has a story and a pace of its own. The A train from Howard Beach takes you right to 125th Street, Harlem's main street. There you'll eat fried chicken at the restaurant Sylvia Woods opened in 1962 and see art at a museum devoted to artists of African descent. Next, climb through Morningside Park to a cathedral so big it has been under construction for more than a century. Then ride down to the Upper West Side for dinosaurs, a blue whale and a giant cookie.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Yes, if your flight is on time. The trip uptown is long, but twelve hours leaves time for two museums and a sit-down meal. Check the day before you go: the Studio Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and on those days the cathedral and the Natural History Museum fill the gap.
Getting from JFK into the city
Ride the AirTrain to Howard Beach and tap out to pay the AirTrain fare, then tap in for a Manhattan-bound A train. Stay on as it runs express through Manhattan and get off at 125th Street. Walk east along 125th Street toward Malcolm X Boulevard, also called Lenox Avenue, for Sylvia's.
Plan on about 2 hr 12 min for the round trip between John F. Kennedy International Airport and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
Passengers from abroad are processed by US immigration at JFK whether or not they're connecting, so a day uptown needs no further documents. If your next leg leaves the country, build in extra time, since bag drop for those flights closes well before boarding.
What to do with your bags
Book a Bounce partner uptown in the app; there are shops in Harlem, Morningside Heights and near the Natural History Museum, so you can drop a bag close to where you start. As of October 2026, storage costs from $2.90 a day. Smarte Carte desks at JFK Terminals 1 and 4 are the airport alternative.

About 7 hr 33 min in the city
Time to head out from John F. Kennedy International Airport for Sylvia's Restaurant. It's a 1 hr 5 min transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
Sylvia Woods opened her restaurant on Lenox Avenue in 1962, and the self-styled Queen of Soul Food turned it into a Harlem institution where politicians, musicians and families all come for the same plates. Book ahead, especially for the Sunday gospel brunch. Fried or smothered chicken, barbecue ribs in the house Sassy sauce, and sides like collard greens and candied yams come with cornbread.
Tip: Get the chicken and waffle if you can only choose one dish; it is the signature order.

Founded in 1968, the Studio Museum has championed artists of African descent for more than half a century, and in November 2025 it opened a seven-floor home by Adjaye Associates on 125th Street. As of October 2026, suggested admission is $16 for adults, Sundays are free with a ticket, and the museum is closed Monday and Tuesday. The galleries show the permanent collection, new commissions and work from its well-known artist in residence program.
Tip: Book your ticket online in advance, especially for free Sundays, when the museum fills up.

NaviTime to head out from Studio Museum in Harlem for Morningside Park. It's a 13 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the team behind Central Park, this narrow park climbs the rocky cliff that separates Harlem from Morningside Heights. Stone stairways lead up past a pond and a waterfall to an overlook with views across Harlem. Most visitors never see it, which is a shame, because it's the prettiest way to get from 125th Street to the cathedral on the hill.
Tip: Take the stone stairs at the southern end of the park to come out a short walk from the cathedral.

Construction began in 1892 and has never been finished, which is why New Yorkers call it St. John the Unfinished. As of October 2026, sightseeing admission is $15 for adults, timed tickets are recommended online, and it opens daily. It's one of the largest cathedrals in the world, longer than two football fields, with a great rose window, art in every chapel and the Poets Corner honoring American writers.
Tip: Step out to the south lawn afterward for the Peace Fountain, a bronze of the archangel Michael above a spiral of animals.

The museum's fourth-floor dinosaur halls hold one of the great fossil collections in the world, including a towering Tyrannosaurus rex. It's also the museum where Ben Stiller works the night shift in Night at the Museum. A dated ticket bought online speeds entry. In the Hall of Ocean Life, a life-size blue whale hangs above the floor, and the Gilder Center's sculpted atrium opened in 2023.
Tip: Head straight to the fourth floor for the dinosaurs before the school groups arrive.

NaviTime to head out from American Museum of Natural History for Levain Bakery. It's a 10 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald opened Levain in a basement on West 74th Street in 1995, and their enormous, gooey cookies became famous across New York. The chocolate chip walnut cookie, close to six ounces, is crisp outside and nearly molten in the middle. The original basement shop is still open, and the line moves faster than it looks, even on weekends.
Tip: Eat one warm on the spot and buy a second for the flight; they keep their texture for hours.
