How to Spend a 10 Hour Layover in Houston: Hobby to Space Center
Updated October 17, 2026
A Saturn V rocket rests in Rocket Park at NASA's Johnson Space Center, a stop on the free tram tours from Space Center Houston, its visitor center southeast of Hobby. See the shuttle on its carrier jet, ride the tram to the Saturn V, then walk a short way down NASA Parkway for Nepali dumplings.
NASA's Johnson Space Center has trained astronauts and run human spaceflight from Clear Lake since the 1960s, and Mission Control for Apollo was here. Space Center Houston, its visitor center, is a big hall of spacecraft, moon rocks and exhibits, with a replica shuttle mounted on the jumbo jet that once carried the real ones. Free NASA tram tours ride onto the working campus, and the one to Rocket Park needs no pass, only a place in line. Afterward, walk a short way down NASA Parkway to Himalayan Taj, a family restaurant that cooks Indian and Nepali food and lays out a lunch buffet every day. No practical bus reaches Clear Lake from Hobby, so take an Uber there and back.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Yes, if your inbound flight is on time and you book admission ahead. Space Center Houston sells timed tickets, so choose an early slot, about an hour after you land, which helps with the tram tours that need a timed pass. The plan gets you back to Hobby with the two hours the airport advises for domestic departures.
Getting from HOU into the city
There's no practical bus from Hobby to Clear Lake, so take an Uber. Follow the rideshare signs from baggage claim. Space Center Houston is on NASA Parkway in Clear Lake. When you're done, walk a short way down NASA Parkway to Himalayan Taj, on the same side of the road, through the parking lots to the next strip center, and book your Uber back to Hobby from the restaurant.
Plan on about 1 hr 10 min for the round trip between William P. Hobby Airport and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
Hobby handles mostly domestic flights plus some to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. If you arrived from abroad, you cleared immigration and customs at Hobby or at your first US airport, and domestic travelers need only the ID they flew with. Everyone goes through TSA screening again on the way back in.
What to do with your bags
Hobby doesn't advertise a left luggage service, so plan around what you carry. Space Center Houston screens every bag and doesn't allow suitcases, large duffels or oversized backpacks inside. As of October 2026, it stores luggage for $7 a bag, and Bounce lists Houston drop-off shops from $3.95 a day, but none are on the way to Clear Lake.
The 10 hour plan, stop by stop
About 6 hr 35 min in the city
Inside, the Starship Gallery holds real spacecraft and moon rocks, and other halls cover the International Space Station, Mars exploration and life as an astronaut. Outside, Independence Plaza lets you climb inside the shuttle replica and the carrier jet. Free tram tours visit working parts of Johnson Space Center, and one stops at Rocket Park and its Saturn V. The Historic Mission Control tour costs extra and often sells out days ahead. As of October 2026, adult tickets bought online cost $29.95 to $39.95, depending on the date.
Tip: The Rocket Park tram needs no pass: join the line at the tram boarding area, or the virtual line in the Space Center Houston app, and explore until your tram is called. The Astronaut Training Facility and NASA Campus trams need a free timed boarding pass from the Guest Services desk, so pick those up as soon as you're inside.

NaviTime to head out from Space Center Houston for Himalayan Taj Indian & Nepali Cuisine. It's a 6 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
This family restaurant sits a short walk down NASA Parkway from Space Center Houston, on the same side of the road, and its cooks have made Indian and Nepali food for more than 15 years. The Nepali dishes are the reason to come: handmade momo dumplings served steamed, tandoori style or in soup, charcoal grilled chicken sekuwa and thukpa noodle soup. A lunch buffet runs every day, and there's a full bar. As of October 2026, a plate of steamed momos costs $11.
Tip: The restaurant closes between lunch and dinner every day, so time your walk over for lunch or the evening service. If you skip the buffet, the momos are folded to order, and the Taj Special Thali gives you a little of everything.
