How to Spend an 8 Hour Layover in Houston: IAH to Discovery Green by Bus

Updated October 10, 2026

Discovery Green turned old parking lots on the east side of downtown into twelve acres of lawns around the one acre Kinder Lake, and METRO's nonstop bus from IAH stops right beside it. Then have lunch at Phoenicia, a Mediterranean food market across the street.

Plan lengths
  • 8 hours
  • 10 hours
  • 12 hours

Discovery Green opened in 2008 on old parking lots on the east side of downtown. Its twelve acres hold the one acre Kinder Lake, an event lawn, an amphitheater, dog runs, a children's water park, public art and two restaurants, with the convention center and the towers of downtown all around. METRO's 500 Downtown Direct bus stops beside it at the George R. Brown Convention Center, so this plan needs no Uber. Phoenicia Specialty Foods, a family owned Houston market, runs a big store across the street with a bakery, a deli and prepared foods. The bus runs about every half hour, so plan the trip back around a specific departure.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Yes, if your flight lands close to on time. The bus is direct and cheap, and the two stops face each other across the street. The plan brings you back to IAH about three hours before your flight, which leaves room for the two hours the airport advises for domestic departures.

Getting from IAH into the city

Go to Terminal E, Level 2, and find the 500 Downtown Direct stop outside Door E-201, between signs 6A and 6B. Ride to the George R. Brown Convention Center stop, listed on METRO's timetable as GRB North Transit Center. As of October 2026, the fare is $4.50, paid by tapping a contactless bank card or phone on the validator, or with the RideMETRO app. For the return, board the 500 at GRB North Transit Center again, and check that the sign shows Bush Airport, since buses toward Hobby stop there too.

Plan on about 1 hr 39 min for the round trip between George Bush Intercontinental Airport and the first and last stops.

This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.

Visa and entry

Travelers arriving from abroad clear immigration and customs at IAH, or at their first US airport, before they can leave the building. Domestic travelers need only the ID they boarded with. Everyone goes back through TSA screening on return. If your onward flight leaves the country, give yourself extra time, because international check-in closes earlier and the airport asks for three hours.

What to do with your bags

IAH doesn't advertise a left luggage service you can rely on, so assume your bag comes along. The bus has room for a carry-on, and the park's paths are flat and paved. As of October 2026, Bounce lists Houston drop-off shops from $3.95 a day, some near the convention center.

  1. Stop #1: Discovery Green

The park mixes open lawn with smaller spaces: Kinder Lake, dog runs, gardens, an amphitheater and a children's water park. Public art is scattered through it, including the Listening Vessels and the Mist Tree, and the park hosts concerts and other events through the year. It is free and open daily from early morning until late at night. Two restaurants sit on the grounds: The Grove, for a sit down meal, and The Grove Market and Park Provisions on Kinder Lake, for burgers, tacos and Texas hot dogs.

Tip: Check the events calendar on the park's website before you land. A free concert or market can make the visit, while a big festival can fill the lawn and close off paths.

Time to head out from Discovery Green for Phoenicia Specialty Foods, Downtown. It's an 8 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Phoenicia Specialty Foods, Downtown

The downtown Phoenicia fills the ground floor of One Park Place on Austin Street, across from the park. It's a full market with an international grocery, wine and beer, a bakery and confections counter, a deli and cheese counter and prepared foods to eat in or take away. The family business began in 1983 as a small grocery. It opens daily, with shorter hours on Sundays only.

    What to order

    • Fresh baked pita and flatbreads
    • Hummus, baba ghanoush and other spreads
    • Cheeses from the deli and cheese counter
    • Baklava and other Middle Eastern pastries

Tip: Buy fresh pita, spreads and pastries at the counters and eat at a table in the market or on a bench in the park. Pick up something sealed and solid for the flight, since spreads count as liquids at security.
