How to Spend an 8 Hour Layover in Houston: Hobby to Hermann Park

Updated October 10, 2026

A path spirals up a 30 foot garden mount in Hermann Park's McGovern Centennial Gardens, and the bus and train from Hobby reach the Museum District with one change downtown. See dinosaurs and space rocks at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, then walk the free gardens next door.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science stands on the north edge of Hermann Park, the big green heart of the Museum District. Its paleontology hall fills several floors with skeletons posed mid hunt, and other halls cover ancient Egypt, energy and the Texas coast. A short walk away, McGovern Centennial Gardens opened in 2014 with a 30 foot garden mount, a rose garden and a long lawn. An Uber is the quickest way from Hobby, but METRO's 500 Downtown Direct bus and the METRORail Red Line make the trip for a few dollars, with a change downtown.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Yes, if your flight lands about on time. The bus and train ride is long, but the museum and gardens are side by side. The plan gets you back to Hobby with a little more than the two hours the airport advises.

Getting from HOU into the city

Board the 500 Downtown Direct at the Hobby Transit Center, north of baggage claim, and ride to the St. Joseph and Main stop by the Downtown Transit Center. Switch to a southbound Red Line train and get off at Museum District station, then walk south along the edge of Hermann Park. For the return, ride the Red Line north to Downtown Transit Center and catch the 500 toward Hobby at the Pierce and Main stop. As of October 2026, the bus is $4.50, and the transfer is free within three hours on the same card or phone.

Plan on about 1 hr 42 min for the round trip between William P. Hobby Airport and the first and last stops.

This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.

Visa and entry

Hobby handles mostly domestic flights plus some to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. If you arrived from abroad, you cleared immigration and customs at Hobby or at your first US airport, and domestic travelers need only the ID they flew with. Everyone goes through TSA screening again on the way back in.

What to do with your bags

Hobby doesn't advertise a left luggage service, so plan around what you carry. The museum is big and busy, and a rolling case gets in the way on its stairs and in its crowded halls. As of October 2026, Bounce lists Houston drop-off shops from $3.95 a day, including shops in the Museum District.

Time to head out from William P. Hobby Airport for Houston Museum of Natural Science. It's a 48 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  1. Stop #1: Houston Museum of Natural Science

The Morian Hall of Paleontology is the main draw, with dinosaurs and early mammals arranged as living scenes. Other halls cover ancient Egypt, Texas wildlife, energy and the planets, and there's a planetarium, a giant screen theater and a butterfly center, ticketed separately. The Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals is closed for a long renovation, with a selection on show in the first floor Hamill Gallery, and the entomology hall is closed. As of October 2026, adult general admission is $25, and the museum opens daily.

Tip: Start with the paleontology hall before the crowds build, then pick one more hall. Leave the extra ticketed attractions for a longer visit, since they eat time on a layover. Permanent halls are free on Tuesday evenings.

  2. Stop #2: McGovern Centennial Gardens, Hermann Park

These gardens opened in 2014 for the centennial of Hermann Park. A path spirals up a 30 foot garden mount with views over the gardens, and a cascade runs down its face. Around it are a rose garden, an arid garden, the Hawkins Sculpture Walk and a long lawn. The gardens are free and open daily. Through October they stay open into early evening, and after daylight saving time ends they close in late afternoon.

Tip: Walk up the garden mount first for the view over the lawn, then follow the sculpture walk back toward the museum and the Red Line.
