How to Spend 8 Hours in Houston: Memorial Park Trails and Saint Arnold

Updated October 10, 2026

Two planted bridges carry trails and prairie over Memorial Drive and join the two halves of Memorial Park, the center of a day outdoors. Walk the woodland trails of the Houston Arboretum, cross the Land Bridge over Memorial Drive, then end at Saint Arnold Brewing for a tour and a meal.

Plan lengths

  • 6 hours
  • 8 hours

Memorial Park is a big park of forest, prairie and sports fields on the west side of Houston, laid out on the site of a World War One army camp. A long restoration has added the Land Bridge, a pair of grassy bridges that carry trails and prairie over Memorial Drive, and new trails through the woods. The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center fills its west edge with free trails through forest, ponds and meadow. Saint Arnold Brewing, founded in 1994, brews just north of downtown, with a big beer garden and free tours. These stops are spread out with no practical transit link between them, so take an Uber to the arboretum, from the Land Bridge to Saint Arnold and back downtown. From the arboretum, the Land Bridge is a short walk on park paths.

The 8 hour plan, stop by stop

Stops and travel: 5 hr 29 min to 6 hr 39 min of 8 hours

  1. Stop #1: Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

The arboretum is a nonprofit nature sanctuary on the west side of Memorial Park, with about five miles of trails through forest, wetland, pond and meadow habitats. Interpretive signs and field stations explain the plants and wildlife, and the Discovery Room and nature shop sit by the entrance. The grounds and trails are free and open daily from early morning to early evening.

Tip: Pick up a trail map at the entrance and walk the Outer Loop, the longest trail, through savanna, prairie and woodland. Add the short Couch Birding Trail spur to its platform over Buffalo Bayou. Bring water and insect repellent, since the woods stay humid even in October.

Time to head out from Houston Arboretum and Nature Center for Kinder Land Bridge, Memorial Park. It's an 18 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Kinder Land Bridge, Memorial Park

The Kinder Land Bridge and the Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Prairie opened in February 2023, a 100 acre project whose planted bridges carry trails, prairie and wildlife over Memorial Drive and reconnect the north and south halves of the park. From the top there are wide views over native grasses and wildflowers. It is free and open daily. Races and festivals take over parts of the park on some days, so check the park's alerts page before you go.

Tip: Walk the prairie loops on the south side after crossing; they are quieter than the bridge top. On race mornings, the trails near the Bayou Wilds area are busy with runners.

Time to head out from Kinder Land Bridge, Memorial Park for Saint Arnold Brewing. It's a 51 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  3. Stop #3: Saint Arnold Brewing

Saint Arnold, which calls itself Texas' oldest craft brewery, poured its first keg in 1994 and now brews and pours on Lyons Avenue, north of downtown. The beer garden and restaurant serve pizzas, salads, sandwiches and plates, plus weekend brunch, alongside its beers, including small batch beers poured only here. Free public tours need no reservation. They run twice on Mondays and Thursdays, in the early afternoon and early evening, and four times a day from Friday to Sunday, from early afternoon into the evening. None run on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Tip: Wear closed toe shoes if you plan to join a tour, since they're required when the brewery is in production. Arrive a little early to get a spot, then stay for a meal in the beer garden. As of October 2026, a flight of five tasters costs $14.
