How to Spend a 10 Hour Layover in Chicago: Midway to the Field Museum

Updated October 2, 2026

A 10 hour layover in Chicago from Midway reaches Museum Campus: SUE the T. rex at the Field Museum, Northerly Island, the Adler skyline view and a Jewish deli finale.

Plan lengths
  • 6 hours
  • 8 hours
  • 10 hours
  • 12 hours

The Orange Line makes Museum Campus surprisingly simple from Midway: get off at Roosevelt and you are a pleasant walk from the Field Museum's dinosaurs. After the museum, wander onto Northerly Island, a quiet lakefront park on the site of a former downtown airstrip, then circle up to the Adler Planetarium, whose lakeside grounds give one of the best free skyline views in Chicago. A deli dinner near the station rounds out the day.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Yes. This is a long, relaxed day with one major museum and plenty of fresh air. The Field Museum sells untimed tickets and the Adler view needs no ticket at all, so you can adjust on the fly if your departure changes.

Getting from MDW into the city

Board the Orange Line at Midway and ride to Roosevelt. Walk east on Roosevelt Road into Museum Campus, or catch the 146 bus near the station on State Street if it is cold or raining. The same station brings you home after dinner.

Plan on about 1 hr 5 min for the round trip between Chicago Midway International Airport and the first and last stops.

This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.

Visa and entry

Midway's international arrivals clear U.S. customs in Concourse A, and every inbound traveler must be admitted before connecting, so there is no transit-only restriction to worry about. Allow for the standard TSA line when you come back.

What to do with your bags

Midway offers no luggage storage, and the Adler has no coat check or lockers, so pack as light as you can. A small backpack is all you want for a day that mixes museum halls with a breezy lakefront walk.

Time to head out from Chicago Midway International Airport for Field Museum. It's a 41 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  1. Stop #1: Field Museum

Máximo the titanosaur fills the grand main hall, but the real star waits upstairs: SUE, the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever discovered, in the Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet. On the main level, look for the man-eating lions of Tsavo in the Rice Gallery. As of October 2026, guest tickets start at $30, entry is not timed, and Illinois residents get free Wednesdays, which makes those days busier.

Tip: To find SUE, take the northeast stairs to the upper level and follow the pterosaurs into Evolving Planet; last entry is late afternoon.

Time to head out from Field Museum for Northerly Island. It's a 12 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Northerly Island

Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago called for a string of lakefront islands, and Northerly Island grew out of that vision. It hosted the 1933 Century of Progress fair and later Meigs Field, a downtown airstrip, before becoming a park of roughly 120 acres with a five-acre pond, natural areas and a path along the west side facing the skyline. As of October 2026, it is free and open daily, though some areas close around concerts at the Huntington Bank Pavilion.

Tip: Walk the west-side path for skyline views across the harbor, and expect detours near the pavilion on concert days.

Time to head out from Northerly Island for Adler Planetarium. It's a 7 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  3. Stop #3: Adler Planetarium

The Adler was the first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, and its perch at the tip of the Museum Campus peninsula gives it the finest free skyline view in the area. Walk around the building to the lakeside lawn and terrace, where the downtown towers rise across the harbor in one sweep. As of October 2026, the galleries and sky shows require timed tickets, and on Wednesdays the planetarium opens later and stays open into the evening.

Tip: The skyline view outside costs nothing; if you want the dome shows, book a timed ticket ahead, since there is no coat check or locker.

Time to head out from Adler Planetarium for Eleven City Diner. It's a 14 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  4. Stop #4: Eleven City Diner

A Jewish deli on Wabash Avenue a couple of blocks from Roosevelt station, Eleven City Diner is the right reward after a long lakefront walk. Order Rubin's Reuben, piled open-faced with corned beef and pastrami, a latke plate, or pastrami and eggs, and wash it down with a Brooklyn egg cream made the old-fashioned way with Fox's U-Bet syrup. Portions are big, so sharing is smart.

    What to order

    • Rubin's Reuben
    • Latke Plate
    • Pastrami & Egg
    • Brooklyn Egg Cream

Tip: It serves breakfast through dinner every day, so this works as a late lunch or an early supper before the Orange Line ride back.
