How to Spend a 10 Hour Layover in Chicago: O'Hare to Skydeck and the Rookery
Updated October 2, 2026
A 10 hour layover in Chicago from O'Hare covers a Route 66 diner breakfast, the Skydeck glass Ledge, the Rookery's light court and the library's Winter Garden.
Ten hours buys you a proper tour of Loop architecture, from street level to 1,353 feet up. You start with breakfast at a diner that has fed Chicago since 1923, ride up to the Skydeck to stand on the glass Ledge, and then walk a few blocks to two interiors locals love: the Rookery lobby, remodeled by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the hushed Winter Garden at the top of the central library. All of it lines up along the Blue Line.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Absolutely. With this much time you can book a Skydeck slot once you land and still keep a generous margin. The catch is the calendar: Lou Mitchell's is closed Monday and Tuesday and the Rookery lobby is closed Sunday, so read the tips for swaps on those days.
Getting from ORD into the city
Ride the Blue Line from O'Hare toward Forest Park and stay on past the Loop stops to Clinton. Lou Mitchell's is a short walk north of the station on Jackson Boulevard, near Union Station, and the rest of the plan runs east along Jackson toward State Street. Jackson on the Blue Line is the stop for the return.
Plan on about 1 hr 43 min for the round trip between O'Hare International Airport and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
Because U.S. airports have no sterile connection zone, passengers from abroad clear border control on arrival with a visa or ESTA, after which they may leave the airport like anyone else. Plan for a fresh security screening on the way back, and keep your passport handy.
What to do with your bags
There is no luggage service at O'Hare and no public lockers. This route passes Union Station, where Amtrak offers temporary bag storage to the public with photo ID for a fee, and LuggageHero lists partners nearby, so you can drop a bag after breakfast.

About 6 hr 2 min in the city
Time to head out from O'Hare International Airport for Lou Mitchell's. It's a 52 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
Lou Mitchell's has served breakfast near Union Station since 1923, and it sits at the traditional start of Route 66. Part of the ritual is free: donut holes while you wait, and a little box of Milk Duds for ladies and children. Order the fluffy Meltaway Pancakes, the Belgium malted waffle or the Greek sausage omelette, with Greek toast and freshly squeezed orange juice. Service is brisk, the counters are busy, and regulars have been coming for decades.
Tip: It opens Wednesday through Sunday only and closes in the early afternoon; on Monday or Tuesday, eat at the airport and start with the Skydeck.

Skydeck sits on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower, 1,353 feet up, and its signature thrill is The Ledge, a row of glass boxes that extend out from the building so you can stand over Wacker Drive with nothing but clear glass beneath your shoes. On a bright day the grid of the city runs to the horizon and the lake fills the eastern windows. As of October 2026, adult tickets start at $32 in thirty-minute timed windows, Expedited Entry starts at $55, and every ticket includes The Ledge.
Tip: Book your slot from the train and pick a clear-weather window; if low clouds swallow the top floors, skip it and linger in the Rookery instead.

NaviTime to head out from Skydeck Chicago for The Rookery. It's a 7 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
Burnham and Root finished the eleven-story Rookery in 1888, and in 1905 Frank Lloyd Wright remodeled its glass-roofed light court in white Carrara marble with gilded, Persian-inspired ornament. A 1992 restoration brought back Wright's version, and the result is one of the most photographed lobbies in the city. Look for the carved rooks around the LaSalle Street entrance, a nod to the building's name. As of October 2026, the lobby is free to visit on weekdays and Saturdays and closed on Sundays.
Tip: Enter through the Adams Street door, keep voices low because it is a working office building, and leave the tripod behind since tripods are not allowed.

NaviTime to head out from The Rookery for Harold Washington Library Winter Garden. It's a 10 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
The Harold Washington Library Center is Chicago's main public library, and few visitors ride all the way to its ninth floor. Up there the Winter Garden opens under a soaring glass roof, a calm, light-filled hall with trees and tables where you can sit with a covered drink and catch your breath before the airport. As of October 2026, the Winter Garden is free with no reservation, though it occasionally closes for private events.
Tip: The library keeps shorter hours on Sundays and opens late that day; the Jackson Blue Line entrance is around the corner for the ride back.
