How to Spend a 12 Hour Layover in Chicago: O'Hare to Lincoln Park and Deep Dish
Updated October 2, 2026
A 12 hour layover in Chicago from O'Hare stretches to Lincoln Park: a free zoo, the Nature Boardwalk, North Avenue Beach, the 360 Chicago deck and deep dish at Lou Malnati's.
Twelve hours lets you leave the Loop behind and see how Chicagoans actually spend a free afternoon. The plan heads north to Lincoln Park, where the zoo costs nothing and a boardwalk circles a restored pond with the skyline rising beyond it. You then follow the lakefront south past a beach house shaped like an ocean liner, ride up to a 94th-floor deck for a view straight down the shoreline, and finish with a buttery deep dish before taking the Blue Line home.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Yes, this is the length where Chicago really opens up. Even with the ride north to Lincoln Park, the schedule stays loose, and the only booking is a 360 Chicago ticket you can buy on your phone. Leave the airport early in the day so the zoo's animal houses are still open when you arrive.
Getting from ORD into the city
Take the Blue Line toward Forest Park to Jackson, follow the underground walkway to the Red Line platform, and ride a Howard-bound train to Fullerton. Walk east along Fullerton Parkway to the zoo. If the transfer tunnel is closed, switch at Clark/Lake to a northbound Brown Line train to Fullerton instead. Clark/Lake is also your Blue Line stop for the trip back.
Plan on about 2 hr 7 min for the round trip between O'Hare International Airport and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
The U.S. requires every international traveler to enter the country even when connecting, so if you hold a visa or ESTA and have already cleared immigration, you are free to explore. Domestic flyers face no formalities beyond the security check when they come back.
What to do with your bags
Since O'Hare says it has no luggage storage, decide before you leave. Bounce and LuggageHero partner shops near the Loop work for a drop on the way north, but a long day of walking along the lake is far easier with one small bag.

About 7 hr 38 min in the city
Time to head out from O'Hare International Airport for Lincoln Park Zoo. It's a 1 hr 16 min transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
Founded in 1868, Lincoln Park Zoo is a privately managed zoo that still charges nothing at the gate, one of the few free zoos left in the country. More than 170 species live across its 49 acres, from African apes to big cats, and the setting inside a lakefront park makes it a pleasure even if you only stroll. As of October 2026, entry is free with no reservation, the grounds open every day of the year, and the indoor animal houses keep shorter hours than the paths.
Tip: Do the indoor animal houses first while they are open, then save the outdoor paths for your walk toward the boardwalk.

NaviTime to head out from Lincoln Park Zoo for Nature Boardwalk. It's a 1 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
At the south end of the zoo, a half-mile boardwalk loops around a pond that was rebuilt as wetland habitat and opened in 2010. Studio Gang's curved wooden pavilion frames the downtown towers like a picture window, and the Lester E. Fisher Bridge gives the classic skyline view across the water. Watch for birdlife in the reeds and plantings along the edge. As of October 2026, it is free and open from early morning until late evening.
Tip: Walk the loop slowly and pause on the Lester E. Fisher Bridge, the spot locals use for skyline photos over the pond.

NaviTime to head out from Nature Boardwalk for North Avenue Beach. It's a 15 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
North Avenue Beach is the city's classic stretch of sand, busy with volleyball games, cyclists and runners on the Lakefront Trail. Its beach house, rebuilt in 1999 after a 1940 original, is styled like an ocean liner moored on the shore. Walk to the water's edge and turn south, and the whole Gold Coast skyline lines up along the curve of the lake. As of October 2026, the beach is free and open daily from early morning until late evening.
Tip: From the beach, follow the lakefront path south toward Oak Street Beach and use the pedestrian underpass to reach Michigan Avenue.

NaviTime to head out from North Avenue Beach for 360 Chicago. It's a 20 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
360 Chicago is the observation deck on the 94th floor of the black, X-braced tower at the top of the Magnificent Mile, and its view runs straight up the lakefront you just walked. TILT, an optional add-on, tips you outward over the street inside a glass frame, while the CloudBar serves drinks beside the windows. As of October 2026, online tickets cost less than gate prices and the deck is open daily into the late evening.
Tip: Buy online during the walk over, since the gate price is higher, and aim for the golden light near sunset if your timing allows.

NaviTime to head out from 360 Chicago for Lou Malnati's Pizzeria. It's a 16 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
Deep dish is an event rather than a slice, and the River North dining room of Lou Malnati's is a fine place to have it. Order the Malnati Chicago Classic, layered with sausage and extra cheese on the signature Buttercrust, or The Lou, loaded with spinach and mushrooms. A deep dish bakes slowly, so start with a Malnati Salad. If you still have room, the Chocolate Chip Pizza is dessert.
Tip: Order the pizza as soon as you sit because deep dish takes a while; the Clark/Lake Blue Line stop is a short walk south across the river.
