How to Spend an 8 Hour Layover in Chicago: O'Hare to Art and Italian Beef
Updated October 2, 2026
An 8 hour layover in Chicago from O'Hare is the right size for the Art Institute's greatest hits, a riverside stroll and a dripping Italian beef at Mr. Beef.
With a little more breathing room, Chicago's single best museum moves into reach. The Art Institute holds Seurat, Hopper, Wood and Van Gogh in galleries you can sweep through in one focused visit, and entry needs no timed slot. From there, the plan walks you north to the water for a stretch of the Riverwalk and finishes at the counter that inspired The Bear, where the Italian beef comes soaked in jus and heaped with giardiniera.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Yes, comfortably, as long as you land on schedule. The museum, the river and the sandwich shop are all close to downtown Blue Line stations, and none needs a timed reservation. Check the day first, since the Art Institute is closed on Tuesdays and Mr. Beef is closed on Sundays.
Getting from ORD into the city
Take the Blue Line toward Forest Park from the station under the O'Hare parking garage and get off at Monroe. Walk east on Monroe Street for a few blocks to the museum's Modern Wing entrance, or continue to Michigan Avenue for the main steps and the bronze lions. For the ride back, Grand on the Blue Line is the closest stop to Mr. Beef.
Plan on about 1 hr 51 min for the round trip between O'Hare International Airport and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
Chicago has no international transit lounge, so travelers arriving from abroad are admitted to the United States before boarding any onward flight. Once admitted, you can leave freely like a domestic passenger. Bring your passport or government ID for the TSA checkpoint on the way back in.
What to do with your bags
The Art Institute runs a free checkroom and asks that bags over its posted size limit be checked there, but O'Hare itself lists no luggage storage. Pack light, or use a Bounce or LuggageHero partner shop near the Loop if you are carrying more than a small backpack.

One of the great encyclopedic museums, and the anchor of this plan. Follow the museum's own one-hour highlights route: Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, a Van Gogh self-portrait, Grant Wood's American Gothic, Hopper's Nighthawks and Georgia O'Keeffe's twenty-four-foot Sky above Clouds IV. As of October 2026, adult general admission is $32, tickets are sold online and on site with no timed slot, and the museum is closed on Tuesdays.
Tip: Buy online to skip the ticket line and drop your bag at the free checkroom; works occasionally go off view, so glance at the highlights page first.

NaviTime to head out from Art Institute of Chicago for Chicago Riverwalk. It's a 16 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link
The Riverwalk runs one and a quarter miles along the south bank of the main branch, from Lake Street to the lakefront, split into the Confluence, Arcade, Civic and Esplanade districts. Tour boats glide past, the bascule bridges stack up one after another, and the McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum hides inside one of the bridge towers. Look across the water for the Wrigley Building and the round towers of Marina City. As of October 2026, it is free and open daily from early morning until late evening.
Tip: Take the stairs down at Michigan Avenue and walk west, so you finish near the Clark Street bridge for the short walk north into River North.

Mr. Beef is the no-frills River North stand that inspired The Bear, and the show's pilot filmed its dining room scenes here. The sandwich to order is the Italian beef: thin-sliced roast beef piled into a roll and dunked in jus. Ask for it hot, sweet and juicy, which means hot giardiniera, sweet peppers and a dip in the gravy. Eat it leaning forward with elbows out, the classic Chicago stance, so it drips on the paper and not on your shirt.
Tip: Mr. Beef closes in the afternoon and all day Sunday, so on a late arrival or a Sunday, move lunch earlier or pick another River North sandwich.
