How to Spend an 8 Hour Layover in Chicago: Midway to Pilsen and Mexican Art

Updated October 2, 2026

An 8 hour layover in Chicago from Midway pairs a quarry turned park in Bridgeport with Pilsen carnitas and the free National Museum of Mexican Art.

Plan lengths
  • 6 hours
  • 8 hours
  • 10 hours
  • 12 hours

This route rides the Orange Line just a few stops and shows two South Side neighborhoods most visitors never reach. In Bridgeport, Palmisano Park turns an old quarry into wetlands, boardwalks and a hilltop with a skyline view. Then you head into Pilsen for a carnitas platter at a beloved cash-only counter and a long look at the National Museum of Mexican Art, a free institution with a strong permanent collection and a long tradition of autumn shows for Día de Muertos.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Yes. Everything here is free or cheap, no tickets are required, and the stops are near the Orange Line, so the trip back is simple. Avoid Mondays, when the museum is closed, and go early because the carnitas counter shuts in the afternoon.

Getting from MDW into the city

From the terminal walkway, board the Orange Line toward the Loop and exit at Halsted. Walk a few blocks south on Halsted Street to the park entrance. Afterward, the 8 Halsted bus heads north to 18th Street, Pilsen's main strip, and the 9 Ashland bus runs south from the museum area to the Ashland Orange Line stop.

Plan on about 1 hr 3 min for the round trip between Chicago Midway International Airport and the first and last stops.

This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.

Visa and entry

Travelers arriving internationally at Midway are processed by customs in Concourse A, so by the time you reach the train you have already been admitted. Everyone, domestic or not, needs photo ID and a boarding pass to get back through security.

What to do with your bags

There is no official bag storage at Midway, and the museum does not permit food inside, so keep any snacks zipped away. A small backpack is best for the quarry boardwalks and the walk along 18th Street between Pilsen stops.

Time to head out from Chicago Midway International Airport for Palmisano Park. It's a 28 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  1. Stop #1: Palmisano Park

For well over a century this was Stearns Quarry, worked from the late 1830s until 1970 and later used as a landfill. In 2009 it reopened as Palmisano Park, with a fishing pond ringed by the old quarry walls, terraced wetlands, more than a mile and a half of paths and boardwalks, and a grassy mound high enough for a clear view of the downtown skyline. Fossils pulled from the quarry now sit in the Field Museum's collection. As of October 2026, it is free and open daily.

Tip: Climb the mound first for the skyline, then follow the boardwalk down to the pond, where the quarry walls look most dramatic.

Time to head out from Palmisano Park for Don Pedro Carnitas. It's a 24 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Don Pedro Carnitas

Don Pedro Carnitas is a cash-only Pilsen institution where slow-cooked pork is the whole show. Get the carnitas platter, which comes with tortillas, onions, cilantro, salsa and crisp chicharrones so you can build your own tacos at the table, or keep it simple with a couple of carnitas tacos. Weekends bring goat tacos and beef brain tacos for the adventurous. It opens early and closes in the afternoon, so treat it as a lunch stop.

    What to order

    • Carnitas platter with tortillas
    • Carnitas tacos
    • Goat tacos, weekends only
    • Beef brain tacos, weekends only

Tip: Bring cash because cards are not accepted, and arrive hungry but early, since the counter closes in the afternoon.

Time to head out from Don Pedro Carnitas for National Museum of Mexican Art. It's a 13 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  3. Stop #3: National Museum of Mexican Art

Founded in 1982, this museum in the heart of Pilsen presents Mexican art and culture, and its yearly Día de Muertos exhibition, held every autumn for four decades, is a highlight of the city's calendar. The permanent galleries trace Mexican art from ancient times to the present, with prints, textiles and paintings. As of October 2026, admission is free, and the museum is closed on Mondays and on holidays, including Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Tip: Allow at least an hour, browse Tienda Tzintzuntzán for folk art on the way out, then catch the 9 Ashland bus south toward the Orange Line.
