How to Spend 4 Hours in Chicago: Art Institute Icons and The Berghoff

Updated October 2, 2026

Four hours in Chicago fits Crown Fountain, a focused tour of Art Institute masterpieces and schnitzel with house root beer at The Berghoff, a Loop original since 1898.

  • 6 hours
  • 8 hours

Four hours is the ideal window for the Art Institute if you go in with a plan rather than wandering. Start at Jaume Plensa's video-faced fountain at the edge of Millennium Park, spend the heart of your time with Seurat, Hopper and Wood, then walk west along Adams Street to The Berghoff, a German restaurant that has outlasted Prohibition and generations of Loop business lunches. It is an easy, polished way to fill a gap between appointments.

The 4 hour plan, stop by stop

Stops and travel: 2 hr 34 min to 4 hr 14 min of 4 hours

  1. Stop #1: Crown Fountain

Jaume Plensa's Crown Fountain is a pair of fifty-foot glass-block towers facing each other across a shallow pool, each screening the faces of everyday Chicagoans, about a thousand residents in all. From mid-spring to mid-fall water runs down the towers and kids splash in the pool, and after the water is shut off for the season the faces keep appearing all year. As of October 2026, it is free to visit.

Tip: Watch a few cycles of faces from the low wall, then cross Monroe Street to the Art Institute's Modern Wing entrance.

Time to head out from Crown Fountain for Art Institute of Chicago. It's a 2 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Art Institute of Chicago

With a few hours you can see the Art Institute properly without wearing yourself out. Entering from Monroe Street, run the museum's one-hour highlights route in reverse: O'Keeffe's vast Sky above Clouds IV, Hopper's Nighthawks, Wood's American Gothic, then Van Gogh and Seurat's La Grande Jatte among the Impressionists. As of October 2026, an adult ticket costs $32 with no timed entry, special exhibitions sometimes cost extra, and the museum is closed on Tuesdays.

Tip: Laptop bags can go to the free checkroom, and anything over the posted size limit must be checked there anyway.

Time to head out from Art Institute of Chicago for The Berghoff Restaurant. It's a 7 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  3. Stop #3: The Berghoff Restaurant

The Berghoff opened in 1898 and holds Chicago's first liquor license issued after Prohibition ended, a license still reissued every year. Its bar served only men until 1969. Today the room pours beer from the in-house Adams Street Brewery and its own Berghoff root beer, alongside Wiener schnitzel, a Bavarian pretzel and a sausage trio. Finish with apple strudel if there is time before your next meeting.

    What to order

    • Wiener Schnitzel
    • Bavarian Pretzel
    • Sausage Trio
    • Berghoff Root Beer
    • Apple Strudel

Tip: Solo diners can grab a bar seat; it opens daily, but the kitchen wraps up earlier in the evening than most downtown spots.
