About Dallas
Dallas began as a trading post on the Trinity River and grew on cotton, railroads and oil into the center of a metro area of millions. Downtown holds the Arts District on its north edge and Dealey Plaza on its west, where President Kennedy was shot in 1963. Deep Ellum, east of downtown, was a Black commercial and blues district before it became a home for live music, bars and restaurants. Bishop Arts, across the river in Oak Cliff, is a walkable cluster of shops and restaurants. DART light rail ties much of it together, and the Orange Line reaches DFW Airport. Summers are long and hot, so walking plans work best in the cooler months or early in the day.
