How to Spend a 6 Hour Layover in Dallas: DFW to Grapevine by Train

Updated October 6, 2026

A 6 hour layover at DFW is a tight fit for downtown Dallas, but Grapevine is one short TEXRail ride from Terminal B. Ride up the station's observation tower, eat in a food hall and taste Texas wine on a historic Main Street.

  • 10 hours
  • 12 hours

Grapevine sits on the northern edge of the airport, and its old Main Street is closer to the runways than downtown Dallas is. TEXRail, the commuter line between DFW and Fort Worth, stops right at Grapevine Main, a newer complex of a hotel, a food hall and a tall observation tower at the foot of the historic district. From there, Main Street runs north past brick storefronts, wine bars and the town's glockenspiel clock tower. The catch is the train itself. TEXRail runs about every half hour at busy times and hourly otherwise, so read the timetable before you leave the terminal and plan the walk back around a specific train. The food hall kitchens open from late morning, the tasting room at midday and the tower only while the visitor center is open, which ends in the early evening, so this plan suits a layover that falls in the middle of the day.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Yes, but only if your inbound flight lands on time and you can match the outing to the train timetable. A missed train in the middle of the day can cost close to an hour, so stay at the airport if a delay has already eaten into the layover. The visits are kept short so that you are back at DFW two hours before departure, which is what the airport advises for a domestic flight.

Getting from DFW into the city

If you land at Terminal C, D or E, ride Skylink inside security to Terminal B before you exit, then follow the TEXRail signs to the DFW Airport Terminal B station. Board a train toward Fort Worth and get off at Grapevine/Main Street, the second stop. As of October 2026, Trinity Metro lists a $2 single ride and a $4 day pass, and the day pass covers the trip back.

Plan on about 32 min for the round trip between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and the first and last stops.

This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.

Visa and entry

Travelers arriving from abroad clear immigration and customs at DFW, or at their first US airport, before they can leave the building. Domestic travelers need only the ID they boarded with. Everyone goes back through TSA screening on return. If your onward flight leaves the country, give yourself extra time, because international check-in closes earlier.

What to do with your bags

Don't count on storage inside DFW; the airport doesn't advertise a left luggage service you can rely on. In Grapevine, the Visitor Information Center inside Grapevine Main, a few steps from the platform, stores bags. As of October 2026, it charges $2 per bag per day, and Bounce lists Dallas drop-off shops from $3.95 a day, though few are near Grapevine. A carry-on also rolls easily along the Main Street sidewalks and fits under a food hall table.

Harvest Hall is the food hall inside Grapevine Main, a few steps from the platform. It holds eight kitchens and two bars under one roof, with counters such as Brisket Rules, Arepa TX, Thai Esane, ZaTaR and Pizza by Luigi, and it serves lunch and dinner seven days a week. Next door, the station building holds the town's visitor center and a 150 foot observation tower, seen on a guided tour that leaves every half hour while the center is open. As of October 2026, the tour costs $3, and on a clear day you may see jets landing at DFW.

Tip: Book the next tower tour at the visitor center first, since tours leave every half hour, and go up before you eat. Then walk the whole counter row before ordering. The platform is just steps away, so check the departure board on your way out.

Time to head out from Harvest Hall, Grapevine for Messina Hof tasting room, Grapevine. It's a 10 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Messina Hof tasting room, Grapevine

Messina Hof is a Texas winery from the Bryan area, and its Grapevine wine bar fills the historic Wallis Hotel building on South Main Street. The list runs to about 40 wines, poured as flights, by the glass and on tap, with small plates to go alongside. Getting there means a walk up Main Street past restored storefronts, galleries and the glockenspiel clock tower. The tasting room opens at midday every day and stays open into the evening.

Tip: Order a flight rather than a full glass. You will taste more Texas wine, and you'll still be clear headed for the walk back down Main Street.
