How to Spend a 6 Hour Layover in Dallas: Love Field to Frontiers of Flight
Updated October 6, 2026
A 6 hour layover at Dallas Love Field fits a visit to the Frontiers of Flight Museum on the edge of the airfield. Then sit down for Texas home cooking at Celebration, a Lovers Lane mainstay since 1971.
Love Field is the airport inside Dallas, and Southwest Airlines, which flew its first flight from here in 1971, keeps its headquarters on the airfield. Its history fills the Frontiers of Flight Museum, which stands on the east side of the airfield. The collection runs from early aviation to an Apollo command module, with a gallery devoted to Southwest and the radio operator's chair from the Hindenburg airship. A short ride away on Lovers Lane, Celebration has served pot roast and chicken fried steak to Dallas families for more than fifty years. Neither stop is practical by transit from the terminal, so take an Uber for each leg. The museum sometimes closes for private events, so check its visit page the morning of your trip.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Yes. Both stops are close to the terminal, so very little of the day goes to traffic. Leave only if you can keep your bag small. The plan brings you back to Love Field an hour and a half before your flight. The airport suggests at least 90 minutes, or about two hours in busy seasons, so add time at holidays.
Getting from DAL into the city
There's no practical bus or train to the museum, even though it is on the airport grounds, so take an Uber for that leg. Uber pickups are in the lot by the valet pavilion next to Garage C. The museum entrance is off University Boulevard by Lemmon Avenue. Take another Uber from the museum to Celebration, and one back to the terminal.
Plan on about 1 hr 36 min for the round trip between Dallas Love Field and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
Love Field handles mostly domestic flights, so most travelers here have nothing to clear and only need the ID they flew with. If you arrived from abroad, you have already passed immigration and customs at your first US airport. Either way, you'll go through TSA screening again on the way back.
What to do with your bags
Love Field has no luggage storage, and the museum says it has no space for visitor bags either. Plan to keep a carry-on with you in the galleries and at the restaurant. As of October 2026, Bounce lists Dallas drop-off shops from $3.95 a day; check its map for one near the airport.

This aviation and space museum fills a large building on the Love Field grounds. Highlights include the Apollo 7 command module and a gallery on Southwest Airlines and its Boeing 737s, and the Lighter Than Air gallery holds the radio operator's chair from the Hindenburg. It opens Monday to Saturday, plus Sunday afternoons, and there's a coffee lounge inside. As of October 2026, adult admission is $20.
Tip: Check the museum's visit page for event closures before you book the ride; several full days in October and November are set aside for private events, and the list gets updated. Inside, the windows by the Love Field gallery look out on the runways.

Ed Lowe opened Celebration on West Lovers Lane in March 1971 in a building of stone, wood and copper, and the restaurant has since grown into two neighboring houses with a fireplace room and a patio. The cooking is Texas home style, with pot roast, meat loaf, fried catfish and a chicken fried steak that the restaurant says Texas Monthly ranked among the state's best. It is open every day.
Tip: From Monday to Saturday, the kitchen closes for a break between lunch and dinner, so check the day's hours before you leave the museum. Sunday service runs straight through from late morning into the evening.
