How to Spend an 8 Hour Layover in Dallas: Love Field to Deep Ellum

Updated October 6, 2026

An 8 hour layover at Dallas Love Field leaves time to reach Deep Ellum by bus and train. Walk the old brick storefronts along Elm Street, where blues musicians once played, and eat Texas barbecue at Pecan Lodge.

Plan lengths

  • 8 hours

Deep Ellum began after the Civil War as a freedmen's settlement east of downtown, along Elm Street, and early residents' pronunciation gave the area its name. By the 1920s, it was a shopping and entertainment center for Black Dallas, and blues musicians such as Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lead Belly played here. The neighborhood faded in the 1940s and 1950s, then came back from the 1980s on with artists, punk clubs and later restaurants. Today, its old brick storefronts hold bars, music venues, shops and restaurants. From Love Field, a free bus and one Green Line train bring you to the edge of the district without a car.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Yes, as long as your inbound flight is roughly on time. The transit trip is simple and cheap, and the neighborhood is compact once you are there. Expect to be back at Love Field an hour and a half before your flight. The airport asks for 90 minutes in normal conditions and more in busy seasons, so plan on an earlier train over holiday weekends.

Getting from DAL into the city

Walk out to the lower level by baggage claim and board the DART Love Link bus at the Ground Transportation drive. It is free from the airport and runs to Inwood/Love Field Station. From there, take a Green Line train toward downtown and ride through it to Deep Ellum station. Pay for the train with a contactless card or the GoPass app.

Plan on about 1 hr 28 min for the round trip between Dallas Love Field and the first and last stops.

This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.

Visa and entry

Most passengers at Love Field are on domestic trips and only need the ID they flew with. Travelers who started abroad cleared immigration and customs at their first US airport, so nothing more is needed here. Allow for a TSA screening on your way back through.

What to do with your bags

Love Field doesn't store luggage, and Pecan Lodge's line and crowded tables are no fun with a suitcase. A small backpack is fine. As of October 2026, Bounce lists Dallas drop-off shops from $3.95 a day, including spots downtown along the train line.

Time to head out from Dallas Love Field for Deep Ellum. It's a 45 minute transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link

  1. Stop #1: Deep Ellum

The draw is the street itself: rows of old brick commercial buildings, now home to bars, music venues, tattoo shops and cafes. From the train, cross to The Traveling Man, a 38 foot stainless steel figure at Good Latimer Expressway and Swiss Avenue, then walk to where Elm Street meets Good Latimer and work east along Elm, looping back on Main and Commerce. The old Knights of Pythias Temple, designed in 1916 by Black architect William Sidney Pittman, stands at the west end.

Tip: Walk out along Elm Street and back along Main, so you see both rows of storefronts without retracing your steps and finish near Pecan Lodge.

Time to head out from Deep Ellum for Pecan Lodge. It's a 6 minute walk if you leave now. Here's the link

  2. Stop #2: Pecan Lodge

Pecan Lodge started as a stall at the Dallas Farmers Market and moved to a brick building on Main Street in Deep Ellum. It is now a fixture of the Dallas barbecue scene, serving brisket, beef ribs, sausage and pulled pork cut to order, plus Southern sides. The line can be long at lunch. It opens daily. On Mondays it closes in the afternoon, and the rest of the week it stays open into the evening.

    What to order

    • Brisket, sliced or chopped
    • Beef rib, about a pound each
    • Hand made sausage, regular or jalapeño
    • Mac 'n cheese and collard greens
    • Aunt Polly's banana pudding

Tip: Share a three meat plate and a couple of extra sides rather than ordering a plate each. Ask for fatty brisket if you like it rich, and grab extra napkins before you sit down.
