How to Spend a 12 Hour Layover in Dallas: DFW to the Bush Library at SMU
Updated October 6, 2026
A 12 hour layover at DFW is long enough to ride DART across Dallas to the SMU campus. See the George W. Bush Presidential Museum, its native prairie park and the Spanish art of the Meadows Museum, then eat by the station.
Southern Methodist University sits in the leafy north of Dallas, beside the Central Expressway. It holds two museums worth a long layover. The Bush Presidential Center opened on its east edge in 2013 with a museum, the National Archives library of the 43rd president and a native Texas park. The Meadows Museum, on the south side of campus, holds the university's collection of Spanish art. SMU/Mockingbird Station is a short walk from both. On weekdays, the Orange Line runs there from DFW without a transfer. As of October 2026, weekend Orange Line trains end downtown, so change to a Red or Blue Line train there, which adds about a quarter hour each way. Twelve hours covers the ride both ways at an easy pace. The Meadows closes on Mondays, so on a Monday, give the extra time to the Bush museum and its park.

Is it worth leaving the airport?
Easily, as long as your inbound flight isn't badly delayed. The train ride is long but simple, and the stops sit close together. The plan has you back at DFW two hours before departure, as the airport recommends.
Getting from DFW into the city
Use Skylink inside security to reach Terminal A, then exit to DFW Airport Station near Entry A10. Ride the Orange Line through downtown to SMU/Mockingbird Station, about an hour and a quarter in all on weekdays. On weekends, change downtown to a Red or Blue Line train, which makes it closer to an hour and a half. The Bush Center is a short walk west across the expressway. Pay by contactless card or with the GoPass app, and keep your proof of payment for the ride back. As of October 2026, a DART Local Day Pass is $6 and covers the round trip.
Plan on about 2 hr 34 min for the round trip between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and the first and last stops.
This plan also keeps 45 min to get out of the airport and 1 hr 30 min to get back through security before your flight. You can customize these buffers with Navi through text.
Times are estimates, not guarantees. Confirm your boarding time with your airline and check entry requirements before leaving the airport. You are responsible for getting back in time for your flight.
Visa and entry
International arrivals finish immigration and customs at DFW, or at the first US airport they landed at, before stepping outside. A domestic connection just needs the ID you flew with. Plan for TSA screening again when you return. If your onward flight goes abroad, budget more time, because international check-in closes earlier.
What to do with your bags
The Bush museum is a federal building with airport style screening, and it does not allow backpacks or luggage, only one purse or small bag per person, so a carry-on can't come in. As of October 2026, Bounce lists Dallas drop-off shops from $3.95 a day. Drop your bag downtown on the ride in, since nothing near the campus will hold luggage.

About 7 hr 11 min in the city
Time to head out from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport for George W. Bush Presidential Center. It's a 1 hr 22 min transit ride if you leave now. Here's the link
The museum follows the Bush years, from the 2000 election through the September 11 attacks and the decisions that came after them. It has a full size replica of the Oval Office, a twisted steel beam from the World Trade Center and the Decision Points Theater, where you choose how to respond to real crises. It opens daily, from Monday to Saturday in the morning and on Sunday from midday. As of October 2026, adult admission is $26, and timed tickets are best booked ahead.
Tip: Save time for the Laura W. Bush Native Texas Park outside, fifteen acres of prairie grasses and wildflowers with walking paths. It is free, and a good stretch after the galleries.

SMU describes the Meadows as home to one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside Spain, from medieval altarpieces to Goya and Picasso, with works by Velázquez and Murillo along the way. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, with late hours on Thursdays. As of October 2026, adult admission is $12, and it's free on Thursday evenings. The museum sits a short walk west across campus from the Bush Center.
Tip: Go straight to the Golden Age galleries if time is short. The Velázquez and Murillo paintings are the heart of the collection, and the sculpture plaza outside is a good place to rest your feet.

The Finch is a restaurant and bar inside Mockingbird Station, the shopping and loft complex built around the DART stop. The menu runs from shareable plates to steaks and comfort food, and there's brunch on weekends. It opens daily from late morning and stays open well into the evening, so it works whatever time the museums let you out. The train platform is a short walk away.
Tip: Sit near the front so you can leave quickly for the train. If the dining room is full, ask about seats at the bar.
